Pratley ’20 fighting his way to the try-zone for the first try of the game

Colgate packed up and shipped north this past Saturday for a 4:00 pm kick-off against SUNY Brockport. After two tough losses at home in the weeks before, the team was hoping to clean a few things up in order to fair better on the scoreboard. This was evident from the outset as Pratley ’20 dotted down the first try of the game for Colgate just 9 minutes in. Unconverted, this put Colgate up 5-0 early. 10 minutes later, Moore ’19 began what was to be a blockbuster day and scored a try for Colgate. Johnson ’21 converted the kick and put Colgate up 12-0. Brockport was not to take this lying down and answered immediately with a try of their own. At just 20 minutes in, the game was already exciting and high-scoring with a score of 12-5. Playing wing for the first time this year, Flanagan ’21 scored a try for Colgate in the 31st minute. In the 34th, Brockport answered. While Colgate was able to convert on their kick, Brockport was not, leaving the score at 19-10 in favor of Colgate going into the half.

Not content with a mere 9 point spread, Colgate took to the pitch with fire in their hearts for the second half. Moore ’19 scored a try for Colgate in the 43rd minute and then again in the 48th. Brockport answered in the 56th keeping things interesting. In the 62nd minute, Baker ’20 battled his way into the try zone dragging a cohort of Brockport players with on or under him. No conversions were made thus far in the half and the scoreboard showed Colgate up 34-15. Hailing from the forward lines, Moore ’19 had already racked up a hat trick but remained hungry to the last. In the 79th minute, he broke the line and ran in another try (his fourth of the day). Johnson ’21 put the final nails in the coffin with a beautiful kick to leave the final match score at 41-15: Colgate Ruggers victorious.

Big shoutout to Sam Baker (Father, Baker ’20) for making the drive to come support us and photograph the game, to Moore ’19 for his all-star performance, to Pitkin ’19 (our Man of the Match) who, after not starting the week before, showed leadership, intensity, and value for all 80 minutes, and to our friends on the Brockport side for a great match and a generous meal after the game–we really appreciate all you do! As always, a HUGE thanks to all of the parents, alumni, and fans that support us–we couldn’t be here without you all!
